*The Warlock is in his father’s palace wearing a black tuxedo and black gargoyle shades while holding a glass of Pepsi*
W: Welcome to my father’s palace for another edition of Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. After going back to the 1930’s in The King’s Speech and the 1920’s for The Artist, we go back to 1980 for tonight’s movie. The winner of Best Picture of 2012 was the based on the true story drama called ARGO.
*The Grand Wizard is on his throne*
Wi: The reason Carter wasn’t re-elected.
W: What’s my dad talking about? More on that in a minute. First the accolades. Alan Arkin was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, the movie won Best Editing and Best Adaptation while the movie was nominated for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Now for the competition, ARGO beat out Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty. I’ve seen Django and Zero Dark and ARGO is definitely the better movie.
*Warlock takes his seat in the middle of the couch*
W: So about Carter…..ARGO is based on the very real events surrounding the Iranian Hostage Crisis. For those that don’t remember, the Shah of Iran was dying and sought asylum in the United States after being a ruthless dictator for decades. Back in 1979, President Jimmy Carter granted him the asylum despite the protests of the Iranian citizens that wanted to extract some justice of their own. Led by Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iranian citizens got their revenge by storming the US Embassy in Iran and taking 52 people hostage. This is the story of how the US government figured out there were some members trapped instead of captured and had to come up with a way to get them out.
Wi: Should have just let them have the bastard.
Wa: So, with an amazing cast that includes Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Alan Arkin and others, a great story and a historical perspective, let’s see if ARGO is deserving of Best Picture. Speaking of John Goodman, he’s now in back to back Best Pictures after being in The Artist. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for ARGO.
