574. Gladiator (2000)

*The Warlock is in The Grand Wizard’s Palace wearing a black tuxedo and Gargoyle shades while holding a wine glass of Barq’s Root Beer*

W: Welcome back to Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. My father will be joining me for this one as tonight’s movie was the winner of Best Picture back in 2000. We reached the new millennium by going back to the past so to speak. Tonight’s movie is the 2 and a half hour action drama GLADIATOR.

*The Grand Wizard is on his throne*

Wi: A tale of the Roman Empire.

W: First the accolades. Russell Crowe won Best Actor, Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, the movie was nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography, the movie won Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound and Ridley Scott was nominated for Best Director. Now for the competition, GLADIATOR beat out Chocolat, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Erin Brockovich and Traffic. Other movies that came out in 2000 that weren’t nominated were Cast Away, Requiem For A Dream, Pollock, Billy Elliot, The Patriot, The Perfect Storm, U-571 and Hollow Man.

*Warlock takes his seat on the couch*

W: So what’s GLADIATOR about. A former Roman Empire general is enslaved by a bitter Emperor and vows revenge by being unkillable in gladiator combat. This movie is going to be messy, bloody and dirty so I’m expecting it to be a great time. I’ve seen Crouching Tiger and its really good so the bar has been set pretty high. Let’s see how this turns out. Grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for Gladiator.
