W: Welcome to my father’s palace for a special edition of Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm that’s been almost 3 years in the making. Back in 2018 my father and I covered the 3 Hobbit movies and the first two Lord of The Rings movies, and we finish the series tonight. That’s right, The Fellowship of the Ring was nominated for Best Picture in 2001 but lost to A Beautiful Mind. The Two Towers was nominated the following year but lost to Chicago. In 2003, the third time was the charm as LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING won Best Picture. Before I get into anything, first the accolades. The movie won Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Makeup, Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects, Best Adaptation, Best Original Song and Best Costume Design, plus Peter Jackson won Best Director. Now for the competition, RETURN OF THE KING beat out Lost In Translation, Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World, Mystic River and Seabiscuit. Other movies not nominated that came out in 2003 were The Cooler and Pirates of The Caribbean: Curse of The Black Pearl.
Wizard: Clint Eastwood directed Mystic River.
W: Yes he did. 2003 was a strange year as none of the movies that were mentioned are all time classics which is probably why Return of The King won. So what’s it about? Gandalf’s crew goes head to head with Sauron’s bad boys in a winner take all brawl for the kingdom and the ring. Its amazing how this won Best Picture and yet NOBODY in this movie was nominated for any kind of acting performance. Not Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, Elijah Wood….nobody. I just saw The Cooler recently and you mean to tell me Alec Baldwin was nominated for that role over anyone here? Snubs aside, this is the end of the Lord of The Rings saga so let’s go out with a bang. Grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING.
