593. Parasite (2019)

*The Warlock is in Thug D’s Place wearing a black tuxedo and gargoyle shades while holding a stein of Dr. Pepper*

W: Welcome to Thug D’s Place for the final edition of Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. We began in 1990 with Dances With Wolves and tonight we finish with the Best Picture winner of 2019….or so the Academy wanted. The Korean drama PARASITE.

*D is in his standard attire*

D: Are you going to bitch about that this entire movie?

W: Absolutely not, but I will explain what I mean. But first, the accolades. Bong Joon Ho won Best Director, the movie was nominated for Best Editing and Best Production Design, and it won Best International Film and Best Screenplay. Now for the competition….and now I’m gonna bitch. PARASITE beat Ford vs Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit……Joker….Little Women, Marriage Story, 1917 and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. I’m sure out of all of those, you remember which one I’m mad about.

D: Get over it!

W: I can’t…..but maybe this will help. Joker absolutely blew me away the first time I saw it and I was dumbfounded that PARASITE won Best Picture over it. You and others have gone on record saying PARASITE was the better movie, so its time to find out. This is the final movie of Oscar’s Month and its been a hell of a month. Let’s see if this mythical beast is, in fact, better than Joker. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for PARASITE.

592. Green Book (2018)

*The Warlock is in his The Grand Wizard’s palace wearing a black tuxedo and gargoyle shades while holding a mug of Pepsi*

W: Welcome to my father’s palace for another edition of Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. We only have two movies left so in second place, we have the 2018 racial drama GREEN BOOK.

*Grand Wizard is on his throne*

Wi: Wasn’t that a book?

Wa: I have no idea. Its one of the few movies on this list I knew nothing about going in. First the accolades. Viggo Mortensen was nominated for Best Actor, Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor, the movie was nominated for Best Editing and the movie won Best Screenplay. Now for the competition and they’re some good ones. GREEN BOOK beat out Black Panther, BlacKKKlansmen, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Roma, A Star Is Born and Vice. I’ve seen Black Panther and my late father in law loved Bohemian Rhapsody so GREEN BOOK has a mountain to climb for sure.

*Warlock takes his seat in the middle of the couch*

W: So what actually is GREEN BOOK about? Viggo Mortensen is an Italian bouncer who somehow becomes the chauffer for classic pianist Donald Shirley. Only problem is Dr. Shirley is a black man and this is supposed to be the South in the 1960’s. So as usual the biopic movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and superhero movies like Black Panther have the iconic scenes and songs but don’t win Best Picture because of the “empowerment”. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last, folks. Still, this may be a good movie but lets find out if it’ll be worthy of Best Picture. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for GREEN BOOK.

*The Warlock opens the door to his lair. He’s wearing a black tuxedo and gargoyle shades while holding a goblet of Barq’s Root Beer*

W: Welcome to my lair…welcome I don’t think so, but enter. Enter my lair if you dare. I’m your host The Warlock.

*Warlock levitates before walking inside*

W: Welcome back to Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. There’s only three movies left and we’re about to see the bronze medal. This one I have no earthly idea how it won Best Picture but in case you haven’t guessed, tonight’s movie is the Best Picture winner from 2017. That movie is the romance drama THE SHAPE OF WATER.

*Warlock takes his seat in the middle of the couch*

W: First the accolades, Richard Jenkins was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Sally Hawkins was nominated for Best Actress, Octavia Spencer was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, the movie was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Screenplay, the movie won Best Original Score and Best Production Design, while Guillermo Del Toro won Best Director. Now for the competition. THE SHAPE OF WATER beat out Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.

*Warlock takes a swig of his drink*

W: So what’s the movie about? Get this…..a janitor working for a top secret research facility falls in love with the fish man the scientists have locked in captivity. Yes, that is the plot. How the hell this beat out Dunkirk and The Post, I don’t know. Just like with Moonlight and 12 Years A Slave, I’m guessing there’s a “message” somewhere in there. So this better be damn good. Let’s find out if this is worthy of Best Picture, so grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for THE SHAPE OF WATER.

W: Welcome back to Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. There are only four movies left in the month and tonight’s movie will be the winner of Best Picture in 2016, the coming of age story MOONLIGHT. First the accolades, Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor, Naomie Harris was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Barry Jenkins was nominated for Best Director, the movie was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Original Score while the movie won Best Adaptation. Now for the competition, and this is gonna piss me off. MOONLIGHT beat out Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion and Manchester By The Sea. My father loved Hacksaw Ridge and I loved Manchester By The Sea.

*Warlock takes his seat in the middle of the couch*

W: So what is MOONLIGHT about? Its about a gay black boy who comes of age and struggles to live his life. Its got a good cast and the story won Best Adaptation so how bad could it be? I’m not expecting to be blown away and the movie content isn’t my cup of tea, but I’m going to give it a chance. Let’s see if it measures up to Hacksaw Ridge and Manchester. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for MOONLIGHT.

589. Spotlight (2015)

*The Warlock is in the Grand Wizard’s palace wearing a black tuxedo and gargoyle shades while holding a wine glass of Barq’s Root Beer*

W: Welcome to my father’s palace for another edition of Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. There are just five movies left and in fifth place we’re going to take a look at a movie that hits close to home, the 2015 bio drama SPOTLIGHT.

WI: The cover up of the century.

W: Exactly, but first the accolades. Mark Ruffalo was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Rachel McAdams was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Tom McCarthy was nominated for Best Director, the movie was nominated for Best Editing and the movie won Best Screenplay. Now for the competition, Spotlight beat out The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant and Room. I’ve seen The Martian and Fury Road, both of them are damn good.

*Warlock takes his seat in the middle of the couch*

W: So what’s SPOTLIGHT about? The Boston Globe figured out that the Catholic Church not only had been molesting children for decades but were doing their damndest to cover it up. The reason this hits close to home wasn’t because I was a choir boy, but I worked in the building a lot of this movie was filmed in while filming was going on. That was a fun time period trying to find parking. Anyway, its based off a true story and its got a great cast featuring Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams and Stanley Tucci. Speaking of Keaton, he’s the newest man to be in back to back Best Pictures. Was this deserving of Best Picture? Let’s find out. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for Spotlight.

*Warlock reads the tagline*

W: Welcome to my father’s palace for another edition of Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. Remember last year I couldn’t do Rocky because I already did it years earlier and watched Taxi Driver instead? Well tonight will be similar since the winner of Best Picture in 2014 was actually Birdman…which I did years ago. Have no fear because I found a suitable replacement for Birdman in tonight’s movie. Tonight we will be watching the 2014 bio war drama AMERICAN SNIPER which was nominated for Best Picture but didn’t win. Directed by Clint Eastwood, AMERICAN SNIPER focuses on the real US Navy Seal Chris Kyle and events in his life that had him tabbed as the best sniper since Vasily Zaitsev. Bradley Cooper plays Chris and since I don’t know too much about the life of Chris Kyle, I don’t have any bias going into this like others would. Usually Clint Eastwood doesn’t miss whether its acting or directing so we’re going to find out if this measures up to Birdman. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for AMERICAN SNIPER.

*Grand Wizard reads the tag-line*

Wi: “Navy S.E.A.L. sniper Chris Kyle’s pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and turns him into a legend. Back home with his family after four tours of duty, however, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.”

W: Apparently Jesse “The Body” Ventura took a lot of heat for attacking Chris posthumously.

587. 12 Years A Slave (2013)

*The Warlock opens the door to his lair wearing a black tuxedo and gargoyle shades while holding a glass of Pepsi*

W: Welcome to my lair…welcome, I don’t think so, but enter. Enter my lair if you dare. I’m your host The Warlock.

*Warlock flicks his wrist and fire appears before walking inside*

W: Welcome back to Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. Tonight we will be taking a look at one of the only movies I really don’t want to watch, but for a different reason than you might think. Tonight’s movie, the winner of Best Picture of 2013, is the biodrama 12 YEARS A SLAVE.

*Warlock takes his seat in the middle of the couch*

W: Why don’t I want to watch this? I’ll get to that in a minute. First, the accolades. Chiwetel Ejofor was nominated for Best Actor, Lupita Nyong’o won Best Supporting Actress, the movie was nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Editing and Best Production Design, the movie won Best Adaptation and Steve McQueen was nominated for Best Director. Now for the competition, and this is where I’m getting pissed, 12 YEARS A SLAVE beat out American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena and The Wolf of Wall Street. I saw American Hustle in theaters and The Wolf of Wall Street is one of my favorite movies. But as usual, the movie with the “message” won Best Picture.

*Warlock takes a swig of his drink*

W: So what is 12 YEARS A SLAVE about? A free black man gets captured and sold into slavery, I’m assuming for 12 years since its based on a true story. Pretty much Django Unchained just reversed and without the Tarrantino touch to it. Now to be fair, its got a great cast including Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti and Sarah Paulson and both leads were either nominated or won an Oscar. I’m still mad though, in my opinion I thought Wolf of Wall Street won Best Picture so this movie has a monumental hill to climb in order to convince me its better. Shout out to Scoot McNairy who plays Mr. Brown in this movie after being in Argo, back to back Best Pictures. Who knows, just like Chicago in 2002, this movie may surprise me. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for 12 YEARS A SLAVE.

*Warlock reads the tag-line*

W: “In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.

W: Sounds like Django Unchained backwards, oh and THE Steve McQueen died in 1980 so this is a different Steve McQueen directing.

586. Argo (2012)

*The Warlock is in his father’s palace wearing a black tuxedo and black gargoyle shades while holding a glass of Pepsi*

W: Welcome to my father’s palace for another edition of Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. After going back to the 1930’s in The King’s Speech and the 1920’s for The Artist, we go back to 1980 for tonight’s movie. The winner of Best Picture of 2012 was the based on the true story drama called ARGO.

*The Grand Wizard is on his throne*

Wi: The reason Carter wasn’t re-elected.

W: What’s my dad talking about? More on that in a minute. First the accolades. Alan Arkin was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, the movie won Best Editing and Best Adaptation while the movie was nominated for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Now for the competition, ARGO beat out Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty. I’ve seen Django and Zero Dark and ARGO is definitely the better movie.

*Warlock takes his seat in the middle of the couch*

W: So about Carter…..ARGO is based on the very real events surrounding the Iranian Hostage Crisis. For those that don’t remember, the Shah of Iran was dying and sought asylum in the United States after being a ruthless dictator for decades. Back in 1979, President Jimmy Carter granted him the asylum despite the protests of the Iranian citizens that wanted to extract some justice of their own. Led by Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iranian citizens got their revenge by storming the US Embassy in Iran and taking 52 people hostage. This is the story of how the US government figured out there were some members trapped instead of captured and had to come up with a way to get them out.

Wi: Should have just let them have the bastard.

Wa: So, with an amazing cast that includes Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Alan Arkin and others, a great story and a historical perspective, let’s see if ARGO is deserving of Best Picture. Speaking of John Goodman, he’s now in back to back Best Pictures after being in The Artist. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for ARGO.

*Wizard reads the tag-line*

Wi: “Acting under the cover of a Hollywood producer scouting a location for a science fiction film, a CIA agent launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1979.”

W: Argo fuck yourself!

585. The Artist (2011)

*The Warlock opens the door to his lair. He’s wearing a black tuxedo and gargoyle shades while holding a glass of Barq’s Root Beer*

W: Welcome to my lair…welcome I don’t think so, but enter. Enter my lair if you dare. I’m your host The Warlock.

*Warlock shoots a lightning bolt before walking inside*

W: Welcome back to Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. Tonight we’re taking a look at a very interesting looking movie. Tonight we will be catching the winner of Best Picture from 2011, THE ARTIST.

*Warlock takes his seat in the middle of the couch*

W: First the accolades. Jean Dujardin won Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius won Best Director, Berenice Bejo was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, the movie was nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay and Best Editing while the movie won Best Costume Design and Best Original Score. Now for the competition, THE ARTIST beat out The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse. The only one of those I’ve seen is Moneyball and I loved that movie. THE ARTIST definitely has a tall hill to climb to beat out that one.

*Warlock takes a swig of his drink*

W: So what is THE ARTIST about? An egotistical silent film actor falls in love with a young dancer……which was exactly the plot of Singin In The Rain. Still, at least Singin just happens to be my favorite movie of all time. THE ARTIST at least tries to be a legitimate tribute to the silent era as its going to be in black & white, becoming the first black and white Best Picture since Schindler’s List in 1993. Now the cast is really solid but the two leads are Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo. The cast we all know is John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller, Missi Pyle, Ed Lauter, Malcolm McDowell and Bill “Patrick” Fagerbakke. With a great cast, a proven storyline and a throwback to an era in Hollywood I actually like, let’s see if THE ARTIST is worthy of being Best Picture. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for THE ARTIST.

W: First the accolades, Colin Firth won Best Actor, Geoffrey Rush was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Helena Bonham Carter was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Tom Hooper won Best Director, the movie was nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound Mixing and the movie won Best Screenplay. Now the competition, THE KING’S SPEECH beat out Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are Alright, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit and Winter’s Bone. I’ve seen The Fighter, Toy Story 3 and Inception so THE KING’S SPEECH has a mountain to climb.

*Warlock continues*

W: So what is THE KING’S SPEECH about? King George the 6th takes over the British throne in 1936 unexpectedly and has to overcome a horrendous stutter in order to be taken seriously. This is going to be a historical biography so naturally it HAD to beat out The Fighter and Toy Story 3 right? Anyway, Guy Pearce becomes the first actor since Michael Pena to appear in back to back Best Pictures. Can this movie blow everyone away and claim the throne to Best Picture or is it a dud in disguise? Lets find out. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for THE KING’S SPEECH.

*Warlock reads the tag-line*

W: “The story of King George VI, his unexpected ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.”

W: How do ya like that? King of the world yet has a stutter.
