*The Warlock is in his lair wearing a black tuxedo and gargoyle shades while holding a diamond studded goblet of Barq’s Root Beer*
W: Welcome to my lair….welcome I don’t think so, but enter. Enter my lair if you dare. I’m your host The Warlock.
*Neyzor Blades is in the recliner wearing a black dress*
N: We’ve already entered, you’re just being redundant.
W: Perhaps, anyway welcome back to Oscar’s Month here at Warlock’s Movie Realm. We’ve had a real string of victories going back to Titanic and tonight’s movie will be no different. The winner of Best Picture of 2006 is a personal favorite of mine, loosely based on the real life gangs of Boston of the 1970’s, I bring you THE DEPARTED.
*Neyz*
N: What is that?
*Warlock looks confused as he takes his seat on the couch*
W: Okay, most of the time I let you saying that pass but this is the one time I’m going to say…..HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK? If you lived in Massachusettes at the time with the Boston Red Sox winning the World Series and the New England Patriots winning 3 Superbowls in four years, you have to remember The Departed. But….I digress. Let’s start with the accolades. Marky Mark Whalberg was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Martin Scorsese won Best Director, the movie itself on Best Editing and Best Adaptation. Now for the competition, THE DEPARTED beat out Babel, Letters From Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine and The Queen. Little Miss Sunshine was one of the best dark comedies I’ve ever seen so THE DEPARTED has some great competition.
N: Didn’t we see Little Miss Sunshine?
W: Yes we did. So what is THE DEPARTED about? Its loosely based on the real life gangster of Boston, James “Whitey” Bulger. Now the official book & movie about Bulger wouldn’t be released until 2015 called Black Mass, so this had to do back then. Jack Nicholsen plays the movie’s version of Bulger and Leonardo DiCaprio plays an undercover cop trying to crack Nicholsen’s crime ring from within. Unfortunately for him, Matt Damon is this movie’s John Connolly who’s always giving Jack tipoffs. But wait there’s more! Marky Mark himself has his eye on both Leo and Damon as a police officer himself.
N: Who is John Connolly?
W: You lived here! You should know!
N: Well sorryyyyyyyy.
W: Anyway, I saw this movie when it first came out and it was awesome. Also this movie was where the Dropkick Murphy’s song I’m Shipping Up To Boston first hit the big time. The Boston Red Sox would use this song as Jon Papelbon’s bullpen entrance music throughout 2007 as they went on to win the World Series again. Everything was coming up Boston back then so let’s get right to it. So grab your popcorn, grab your drink and grab your woman because its time for THE DEPARTED.
